Community canvass. Social movements, community organizing campaigns, and political campaigns have long relied on door-to-door and face-to-face strategies for getting their messages out. Some individual nonprofit organizations have also used this for both fundraising, membership recruitment, and public education. This past summer, I attempted with the help of five college students and a handful of volunteers to use this strategy to mobilize a diverse inner city neighborhood to support its community nonprofits and step up the level of community engagement. The effort was limited in time and funding, but I felt the results were promising:
